And such beautiful illustrations! I really enjoyed the style and colouring of this graphic novel, it fit really well with the setting in making it feel even more beachy.Īlso, a whole book so focused on baking, YUM! There are so many panels devoted to the different things they’re cooking up in the kitchen and it was really interesting to see how all the kinds of pastry were illustrated. A sweet story today to offset the odd ones from earlier this week – a very cute romance set in a bakery!īloom by Kevin Panetta and Savanna Ganucheau What I wasn't prepared for was an unconventionally striking story that will definitely not appeal to someone looking for a typical YA paranormal book. Maya is enamored of the ideas put forth in the book, which seems to promise to help her solve her unpopularity woes. One day, Maya’s dad presents her with a copy of a book by the model and author Betty Cornell, Betty Cornell’s Teen-Age Popularity Guide. In the eighth grade, Maya says that she is a “social outcast,” though not much real evidence supports this belief. The novel takes place in the early 2010s. The novel is considered a helpful companion to young girls’ coming-of-age in a society that sometimes tells them their natural looks and personalities are not enough. Ultimately, the curling irons, accessories, and Vaseline on her eyelids only make for a laugh, teaching Maya the value of being herself. Starting from what she believes is social rock bottom, Maya tries to adopt the mannerisms and interests of the “cool girls,” in particular those of Maya Cornell, a former teen model she idolizes. Written when Van Wagenen was only 15 years old, the novel follows a fictionalized, slightly younger version of Maya as she embarks on a quest to become popular at school. Popular: Vintage Wisdom for the Modern Geek is a 2014 humorous children’s novel by American author Maya Van Wagenen.
Can you tell where I’m headed? This is one of my favorite books. Or you can snag a book in about 30 seconds that you have a vague inkling of and it rises to your favorite-books-of-all-time list before you’re even done with it. You can buy a book with stars in your eyes and plaudits ringing in your ears and be sorely disappointed. Two minutes to go? Alright then, in my hand, on the counter, and out the door.īooks are funny that way. More than one person in my writing group had recommended it, and I was pretty sure I had slid it into my TBR. Something caught my eye: a pristine paperback copy of George Saunders’ Lincoln in the Bardo. I had maybe ten minutes in the shop, no internet access to speak of (in order to look at my list of books-to-read-next/TBR), and so found myself in front of one of the fiction shelves, zoning out while staring at the books displayed on top. There were two used book stores on the same street and, although unfamiliar with the area, I was compelled down the street to get myself a book (and just be around all those books!) before doing the drive back home. I was headed to a pedicure with my mother-in-law, sister-in-law and daughter and had about 20 minutes before my appointment to spare. I had packed the last two books in the Lord of the Rings series and then had devoured what was left of them. This book is no less boring than a million books on my feed people are rating 5 stars. And, ya know, I’m almost done with the second and I don’t QUITE get what everyone’s bitching about. I literally am laughing right now because, really, what are the odds that everyone hates a book I love. That moment when you realize you love a TOTALLY cliche book that almost all your friends (And most of the community) hates. and to make Bianca question everything she's ever believed.
